To be published May 2008

This new book by Graham Dover recounts some of the history of around eighty of the better pubs in ESSEX.

Included inside are tales of Smugglers, hiding their contraband in the dead of night, and Highwaymen lurking near famous coaching inns for the next victim to relieve of their possessions.

There are Ghosts, seen and heard, in bedrooms, bars and cellars of pubs throughout the county, and Witches and Heretics burnt at the stake in the very garden where we now relax on a summer’s day.

There are stories of Murders, Shootings, Accidental Deaths, and of Inquests held in Pubs that also acted as the local Courthouse.

also included are tales about members of Royalty, Politicians, Sportsmen and other Celebrities who have taken advantage of a tavern’s good hospitality, and of past Celebrations, Meetings and Sporting Events held inside them.

This new book makes ideal reading for anyone with an interest in local history, or perhaps those with just an interest in the history of their local.
